“Ending open defecation” in Agokopé and Aloyi – Phase III
Capacity building for local artisans in the construction of VIP two-pit latrines
As part of the project’s implementation using the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) methodology, the construction of VIP-type two-pit latrines requires adherence to specific technical standards to ensure the structures’ durability, hygiene, and safety.
Aware of these requirements, NGO DZIDZO placed particular emphasis on strengthening local capacities. To this end, artisans from the beneficiary communities volunteered to participate in technical training on the applicable construction standards.
This training covered, in particular:
- the foundation plan, guaranteeing the stability and solidity of the structure;
- the elevation plan, ensuring construction that meets hygiene and safety standards;
- the technical cross-sections of each toilet compartment, allowing for the proper use of the two pits and adequate ventilation.
The intention is not only to ensure a quality result in the construction of latrines, but also to value local skills, promote community ownership and contribute to the sustainability of sanitation infrastructure.
